NOAH’S ARK SAILS IN EXNING

St Martin’s Church in Exning was packed last Sunday, needing extra chairs to be brought in, as proud parents gathered to see their children perform "Captain Noah and his Floating Zoo". The performance took place during the regular "Worship For All" service and was the culmination of Exning’s Music Week.

During the week of August 10th, thirty-five (35) children rehearsed the 10 songs that make up the Captain Noah musical. The week was the brainwave of Christine Conway-Jarrett, who said "children love to sing but there are so few chances for them to do this outside school". Christine played piano whilst he daughters Kayleigh (18) and Samantha (16) rehearsed the children each day. The family are all accomplished musicians and the girls have trained at Lincoln Cathedral Choir. Their professionalism included a "warm up" fun song for the children – with parents and congregation joining in on Sunday!

But a show needs props and, as well as learning the songs each day, the children created: animal face masks; portholes with animal faces; an ark; and a "rainbow of hands". They were assisted in this by a team of helpers who also led them in games outside in the sunshine.

Exning’s Vicar, Revd. Joyce Williams, said: "We are very aware that part of the Church’s ministry is to serve the community and we see this a starting point for many new initiatives". One such under consideration is a more regular opportunity for people of all ages and abilities to come together to make music and sing.

When asked whether she would do it again, Christine said: "I’m already thinking of what to do next year – with "Joseph" being highly likely"
